So you got yourself a brand new bed mattress and bedding? Or maybe you are moving and you don’t have space to move your old bed and mattress with you? Maybe you just got bored with it and you want to make some changes to your bedroom. No matter the reason, what you need to do is learn how to dispose of old mattress and do it by the law, or you risk getting yourself a nice fine.

Not following the rules outlined by the city will cost you! Luckily for you, I have already done some research about this problem, and I’m willing to share my knowledge with you, so read on and find out what you need to do.

How To Properly Dispose Of Old Bed Mattress

I have good news for you. In NYC, you won’t need to take your old bed mattress anywhere special. However, this is the rule for NYC only, if you are living in some other city please don’t do this on your own, better call some local disposal center and ask them for advice. So if you live in some of the five boroughs, it is acceptable to leave old bed mattresses in the area where trash is typically collected.

Since it is easy like that there are some simple rules you should be following, such as living it in the trash area, or on a curb the night before the trash will be collected by the city, that is somewhere between 4 pm and 12 am. You can also be responsible and look up your address and find out your waste collection day, on the NYC Department of Sanitation website.

Any mattress must be left in a plastic bag, you can’t leave it bare on the streets. There is a rule about the color of the bag. All colors are acceptable except red or orange. Now you must wonder why you need to pack it in a plastic bag? Well, the reason is rather simple – bed bugs. Unfortunately, bed bugs are very common nowadays, and they spread so easily.

You need to know that if you don’t put your old mattress in an adequate bag it won’t get collected and you risk getting a $100 fine.

Where you can find plastic bags for old mattresses?

The city does require you to put your old mattresses into plastic bags when you are disposing of them, however, they don’t provide you with those bags. So your responsibility is to find them. Some small planning ahead will be necessary to make sure you have the right kind of bag ready when it comes the time for leaving it in the trash. I’m sure you have all already seen this type of bag, but you just didn’t pay attention to it.

You may find mattress bags at big box stores, home improvement stores, hardware stores, or moving supply stores. If you are not in the rush and you can wait for the matter bag to be shipped to your home, you can also order it at some online retailers as well. They are relatively inexpensive. The price range is around $6 to $12 per bag, of course, this mainly depends on the size of the bag and where you bought it (naturally, when you order it online you’ll need to pay the delivery as well).
